Confessions of a Life Insurance Startup: Who Owns an insurance policy?

At Haven Life, our team tries to walk the talk. We invest with roboadvisers. We believe Venmo truly has made splitting bills much easier. We use every car service app available in Nyc. And, we buy life insurance whenever we need it.

That being said, on we well over 100 people, not every one of us have life insurance.

But, for people who don't possess a policy, there exists a good rationale and knowledge of why we've not taken the plunge yet. For individuals who do have life insurance, I'd argue we have even better stories to inform.

And, we want to share.

Me, Brittney Burgett, Marketing & Communications Director

I purchased a Haven Term policy about fourteen days ago. I'm marriage soon, and we were launching the brand new Haven Life, and so i provided to test drive our experience before it went live. (My new claim to fame is that I qualified for the InstantTerm process, which means I didn't need to take an existence insurance health check either.)

While my fiance, Clayton, and I don't have any debt, we do have plans to buy a home soon. I know coverage is more affordable younger and healthier you're, so I chose to make the most and secure a minimal rate. My 30-year, $500,000 policy will last until we're both nearer to retirement, by only then do we intend to have more assets squared away.

I am the proud who owns a Haven Term policy! Actually, I was one of our first customers.

It may seem odd – I'm 31, single with no kids, and I have a little bit of coverage through my employer benefits. However, I've additional coverage for a few reasons. I bought a home in 2021, and that i still have a big mortgage that I am working to reduce each month. If something were to happen to me, I don't want my mortgage to become burden on my parents or my siblings.

Also, I understand that this is the time to purchase and get the best price. I'm still young and very healthy, with plans to get married and have kids someday. Having ample life insurance coverage now's one less aspect to worry about when that time comes!

As for Brittney, good luck with that discount!

With a wife, two kids, along with a house, I've got a fair amount of life insurance. It's not the coolest nor most tangible expense I've, but out of all my expenses, it can make me feel the best. Why? Because every other problem life throws, I'm exist for my family solve, but not this one.

John Latona, General Manager

I purchased life insurance for that very first time in 2021, and not from Haven Life. Let me explain. I had been 47, and the past 2 yrs had been a whirlwind of life events for me personally. I had been married, had my first child as well as was a first-time homeowner.

I knew I desired life insurance coverage, and I needed it right away.

Unfortunately, Haven Life hadn't yet launched and that i couldn't afford to wait-.and, honestly, I was eager to gain firsthand experience on the traditional procedure for purchasing term life insurance.

I found an excellent agent (thanks, Yaron!), and as an educated customer (I do operate in the industry, after all) I thought it might be a snap. However it still took control of 3 months from beginning to end. Lots of faxing and re-sending fine-print documents backwards and forwards. Maybe not an average experience, but for me it was time-consuming and frustrating. It also offered me a great perspective how we're able to change items to result in the process simpler, faster and easier for our customers at Haven Life

In the finish, it was a large relief to know that my (very new) family was covered and will be looked after should I die.

Being married, with a child, a home loan and a car loan, I always thought my employer sponsored plans were sufficient. However, I’ve found that the “what ifs” of life can be the employer sponsored life insurance plan quite insufficient. For one thing, what would have occurred if something became of me as i was at unemployed? A company provided policy is just active while you're employed with the company, after all.

Or, what would happen when we choose to take an early retirement? Life insurance rates drastically increase as you become older, and I'd hate to choose from without protection for my family and substantially cutting into our retirement funds to pay for that protection.

After joining Haven Life, we started to rethink our coverage needs. While chilling out on the couch, with coffee as well as an iPad, we decided to estimate our rate around the Haven Life website. It was then which i realized my current coverage isn't just insufficient in my family's needs, but also helped me again reconsider what can take place in the event of the burglary coverage? What can occur to my family without both my income and the lack of a life insurance policy?

This has now become a significant topic of conversation at our dinner table. Even our son is getting in on the conversation, and I'm happy we're giving him this very important lesson now. My wife and I are looking for a plan that will fulfill our needs today and years down the line. Hopefully to have a decision (as well as a reliable and affordable policy) soon.

I’d hate to consider what would happen to my loved ones basically wasn’t there on their behalf, and wish to ensure that they'd at least be adequately protected financially.

Although I procrastinated for years after having my first kid, I finally decided I truly needed life insurance coverage when I started seeing reports forecasting what college expenses could be when my two kids reach college age (yes, it’s that scary – if you haven’t checked maybe you shouldn’t…)

I’m occasionally known to over-analyze things just a bit, so despite I made a decision to obtain life insurance coverage, actually working all things in the variety of options did take me quite a while – about three months. To the agent I had been working with it likely felt like 3 years due to the quantity of questions I asked and examples and illustrations I requested. I ended track of a fundamental term life policy to ensure coverage of mortgage costs and at least part of the education costs, without paying a huge amount every year.

As you are able to clearly see, life insurance is an extremely personal product. No two experiences by using it are similar. What is consistent (and important) however is you take time to a minimum of consider your coverage needs. You may need life insurance coverage. You might not. It may even be less expensive than you believe.

When you're ready to start the conversation and make your lifetime insurance story, we'll be here to help.
