“Floridians have less than a year to have their upgraded license,” says Ellsworth Buck, V . p . of Insurance, Florida's top independent car insurance agency.
Beginning
October 1, 2021, every air traveler must present a genuine ID-compliant driver's
license, state-issued enhanced driver's license, or other
acceptable types of identification, such as a valid passport or U.S. military
ID, to fly within the United Sates.
Those
who're not able to verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint and will not be permitted
to fly.
“This is a vital part of enhancing commercial aviation security and that we urge travelers to ensure they have compliant documents,” said Acting Secretary for Department of Homeland Security, Kevin K. McAleenan. “DHS is dedicated to working with states as they continue their efforts to issue REAL IDs to Americans.”
“This
might be a surprise to a lot of, but REAL IDs will be in the creating a
while,” says Buck, V . p . of Insurance, Florida's biggest
independent auto
insurance company.
Passed
by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s
recommendation the Federal Government “set standards for that issuance of
causes of identification, for example driver’s licenses.”
DHS reports only 27 % of american citizens possess a REAL ID. How can you tell if your ID is acceptable? A
REAL ID compliant card in Florida, includes a gold star within the upper right-hand
corner.
In to get the REAL ID compliant card, Floridians must
go to a DMV office and produce original documents validating their identity,
Social Security number and residential address. When there is no gold star on your
drivers license or ID card, you can't renew online.
Previous driver license and ID cards will still be being used alongside the brand new credential until replaced or eliminated, based on the Florida Highway Safety and Cars, (FLHSMV).
