Who doesn't want a brand new start in the new year? Goal setting techniques for the upcoming year to improve our lives can help us to remain focused on success.

However, Forbes.com reports, 80 percent of New Year's resolutions fail because individuals are overly ambitious using their goals. This statistic shouldn't prevent you from creating a resolution. But maybe concentrate on setting one that is more realistic to attain.

So where do you start? Try evaluating a few areas of your life that you feel inspired to improve.

Health

Maybe you have to remove or add something to your diet that will help you slim down or decrease your cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic reports, regular exercise can increase self-confidence, enhance your sleep and lower symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety.

Finances

Money is a sensitive subject, but we are able to all agree, being anchored to debts are not a way to reside. Creating a realistic budget can provide peace of mind. Financial guru, Dave Ramsey says establishing a budget will also reduce stress, build for future years, provide responsibility, as well as a help you dig your way not in debt.

Time

If you are feeling like you do not have sufficient time in the day, you probably need to re-evaluate your calendar. Extracurricular activities are great, however they can become a drain in your time. Plan vacations, date nights and family amount of time in advance and stand firm to those dates. Also, remove activities that are not in line with your greatest values.

Stuff

Do not underestimate the power of the clutter you've in your lifetime. Clutter causes stress. An overabundance of stuff can be draining. Less stuff means less energy spent organizing and re-organizing and much more time allocated to what you enjoy. De-cluttering your home provides you with more control over your life. It enables you to identify what is important and what you don't need hanging around.

Author and Netflix star, Marie Kondo, encourages individuals to surround themselves with items that offer positive. She explains in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, “We should be choosing what we wish to keep, not what we want to get eliminate.”
