Buying a Vintage Camper

Vintage RVs are increasingly popular on the road. “Nostalgia is a valid motive for getting a vintage camper,” says Ellsworth Buck, V . p . of Insurance Florida's largest independent RV insurance company.

Classic campers not just provide a trip down memory lane, but other benefits too. “Fixer” vintage campers can frequently save you a substantial amount of money. They're less than newer models but not usually decked out with the latest tech. Investing right into a camper that needs some restoration can provide you with the opportunity to customize your RV to suit your needs.

Before purchasing one of these cool classics consider a few of the following factors. Just how much space do you need? Vintage RVs are smaller than newer models. Also, just how much work are you prepared to do? Are you currently up for minor replacements such as a new awning and curtains or isn't it time to invest some sweat equity with a wall or floor replacement?

“If DIY isn't your thing, you may be in the market for a reconditioned vintage camper, or a new trailer with modern conveniences but a vintage look, both of them are on the market,” says Ellsworth Buck, V . p . of Insurance Florida's top independent RV insurance provider.

Keep in your mind campgrounds. Gorving.com reports not all campgrounds are vintage RV friendly. A spot age restrictions on the kind of RV they permit. Likewise, restrictions on length limit can generate problems since many vintage trailers are on the shorter side.

Once taking these points into account, where would you start? Try setting up a daily search for “vintage camper” on multiple sources, your local Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace and classified newspaper pages.

The KOA  has some suggestions on making a wise investment when looking for a classic camper.

  • Solid flooring-flooring is difficult to replace
  • Water damage-this is definitely an indicator of a major problem/project
  • Whole and unbroken axle- otherwise this is a costly fix
  • Original windows and hardware-original windows take time and effort to find
  • Working electrical system-this is simple but a time-consuming project
  • Bad smells- could be a host of issues, mold, mildew, pet urine
  • Properly functioning appliances and propane lines
  • Clear title-for proper registration and transfer

One from the benefits to having a vintage camper is the community. Be sure to locate an owners group if you have questions or when you are rolling!
